Former Australian of the Year Rosie Batty has argued for domestic violence perpetrators to be treated in a way comparable to terrorists, reflecting the seriousness of the threat posed by repeat and high-risk offenders.

The comparison is deliberately confronting. Supporters argue that authorities should use the same urgency, intelligence-sharing and preventative focus applied to other serious threats to public safety. Critics may question whether terrorism laws and terminology are appropriate for domestic violence or whether existing criminal laws should instead be strengthened and better enforced.
