Preamble

Several countries have introduced, or are considering, specific criminal offences recognising femicide as the intentional killing of women because they are women. Supporters argue that a separate offence reflects the unique nature of gender-based killings and strengthens public awareness and accountability, while others believe existing homicide laws already provide adequate legal protection.

Government Response

Australian governments currently prosecute these offences under existing homicide laws. While governments continue to review legal responses to domestic and family violence, Australia has not introduced a separate offence of femicide.
