Open Democracy Could Decide the 2025 Federal Election

The Greatest Change in How Australia is Governed since Federation

Sydney, April 2025 – The current federal election can be likened to the cab industry before Uber.

Then the choice was between the entrenched cab companies and a few shiny new entrants.

But they were all still part of the failing cab industry – unresponsive, corrupt and resistant to change.

The Uber came along and we realized we had another option.

There is an opportunity to bring similar much-need disruption to politics by asking the politicians about open democracy.

That idea is Open Democracy: a model that gives everyday Australians a greater say in government decisions on an ongoing, issue-by-issue basis.

At a time when trust in politics is low and pre-election promises often fade post-election, Open Democracy offers not just better outcomes, but also a mechanism for accountability.

“Open Democracy ensures pre-election promises don’t become post-election disappointments.”

If Open Democracy is as inevitable as ridesharing—thanks to technology—why isn’t anyone talking about it?

Because no one’s been asking the politicians the right question. Until now.

We’re calling on the mainstream media to help shift the conversation by asking the political parties and the independents a simple question:

“Do you support giving all Australians a greater say in government decisions, not just occasionally through a plebiscite or referendum but on an ongoing issue-by-issue basis through open democracy?”

In the weeks just before the election is the time when the politicians are highly responsive, knowing that this is the time when people begin to seriously think about who to vote for.

It is prime time for disruption.

At a time of growing economic, environmental, and political uncertainty, this is the debate Australia urgently needs to have—not only to address today’s challenges, but to future-proof our democracy, rebuild public trust, and secure long-term stability for the nation.

Open democracy represents the greatest change in how Australia is governed since Federation.
