SBS was established to provide multilingual and multicultural broadcasting for Australia’s diverse population. Its supporters argue that it continues to give representation to communities that may otherwise receive limited coverage and helps Australians understand different cultures, perspectives and international events.

Critics argue that Australia’s media environment has changed substantially since SBS was created. Multilingual and international content is now widely available through commercial television, streaming platforms and online services. They question whether a separate taxpayer-funded multicultural broadcaster is still necessary.

The issue is therefore whether SBS continues to perform a distinctive public function that would not otherwise be adequately provided.

Question:

To what extent do you agree or disagree that Australia still requires a publicly funded multicultural broadcaster such as SBS?
