Release the Gas Files?
Should the government be forced to release all secret gas export agreements?
← Gas Exports and Fair Share for Australians
Preamble:
The government has signalled that a gas export tax may not proceed because of existing contracts.
But those contracts were negotiated behind closed doors. Australians have never seen them. And yet, they are now being used to justify decisions worth billions of dollars in public revenue.
These agreements involve Australia’s natural resources, which belong to the people. If they were negotiated in the national interest, there should be nothing to hide.
Critics argue that secrecy protects bad deals, shields decision-makers from accountability, and locks in outcomes that cannot be challenged. Supporters of confidentiality claim commercial sensitivity requires secrecy.
But the question is simple.
If these contracts are shaping the country’s future, should they remain hidden?
