Did John Howard Give Away Australian Gas?
Were Australia’s gas export agreements negotiated in the national interest?
← Gas Exports & Fair Share for Australians
Many of Australia’s gas export agreements were negotiated in the early 2000s, during the Howard government. These long-term contracts have played a major role in shaping Australia’s position as one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas.
However, the details of these agreements have not been made public, and questions remain about whether Australians are receiving a fair return from these publicly owned resources.
As some of these contracts approach expiry, the issue has taken on renewed importance. Without transparency, it is difficult for the public to assess whether these agreements delivered the best possible outcome for Australia.
