Preamble:

Many of Australia’s gas export agreements date back decades and may soon be renegotiated.

This creates a critical decision point. Either the next generation of agreements is negotiated the same way—behind closed doors—or a new standard is set, where the public can see and assess the deals being made on their behalf.

If transparency is not made an election issue, these decisions may again be made without public scrutiny, locking in outcomes for decades.

Supporters argue that secrecy enables governments to sign deals that would not withstand public scrutiny. Others claim confidentiality is necessary to secure investment.

But this is a question about democracy.

Should governments be allowed to sign away national resources in secret?

Question:

Should voters make full transparency of gas and mineral agreements a decisive issue at the next election?
